The American Pony Drive.

Does anyone remember the American Pony Drive or anyone who took part ?  It was organized by John Manners with European Mustang owners clubs. In 1989 the 25th Anniversary of the Mustang there were numerous Mustang shows all celebrating this Anniversary with one of the Largest at Knott's Berry Farm in Los Angeles. The Pony Drive brought together Mustang owners from all over Europe who then shipped there cars back to the USA for the long and very memorable trek of over 3,000 miles from Jacksonville Florida to Los Angeles.

I was very fortunate in being the owner of one of only four cars from the U.K. to make this epic journey.

Collecting the cars from Jaxport, Jacksonville, Florida for the beginning of the journey.

Hotels and Motels with large car parks were a must for the ponydrive stop overs.

When attending shows or arriving at a large city the ponydrive went in convoy which sometimes caused a traffic jam on its own but was always a real crowd puller.

Another show this time at John Chandler Ford (Ford dealer) arranged by the Texas Panhandle Mustang Club, Amarillo,Texas.

The Anniversary show in L.A.The picture shows the cars at Knott's Berry farm with from left to right Steve with his 65 RH.D coupe next to Angie Arnold ( the then sec of the MOC ) and her daughter who drove Vics car on the return journey to Washington D.C. , Then theirs me with my 69 Fastback and John with his 1967 390 G.T.

Driving several thousand miles across the U.S. and back something was bound to break, But did it have to be in the middle of the Arizona desert, I8 to Tucson.
